A man from Dupree, South Dakota, has been sentenced to six months in federal prison for possessing a firearm and ammunition despite being prohibited due to a prior felony conviction. The sentencing of Sam Reede, 38, was handed down by U.S. District Judge Eric C. Schulte on January 20, 2026.
Reede will also serve two years of supervised release after his prison term and must pay a $100 special assessment to the Federal Crime Victims Fund. He was indicted by a federal grand jury in February 2025 and pleaded guilty on September 10, 2025.
According to the U.S. Attorney’s Office, “The conviction stems from Reede possessing a rifle and ammunition in his residence while fully aware he was prohibited from possessing firearms and ammunition based on a prior felony conviction he previously attained.”
The case is part of Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), an initiative that brings together law enforcement agencies and communities to reduce violent crime and gun violence. The Department of Justice launched an updated violent crime reduction strategy for PSN on May 26, 2021. The strategy focuses on building trust within communities, supporting organizations that prevent violence, setting targeted enforcement priorities, and measuring outcomes.
The investigation involved the FBI, the Cheyenne River Sioux Tribe Law Enforcement Department, and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives. Assistant U.S. Attorney Wayne Venhuizen prosecuted the case.
Following sentencing, Reede was immediately taken into custody by the U.S. Marshals Service.
