A Fort Thompson man has been sentenced for failing to register as a sex offender, according to an announcement from United States Attorney Alison J. Ramsdell. U.S. District Judge Eric C. Shulte handed down the sentence on July 29, 2025.

Stuart Dion, 41, received a sentence of time served through August 4, 2025, which totals approximately 11 and a half months in custody. He will also serve five years of supervised release and must pay a $100 special assessment to the Federal Crime Victims Fund.

Dion was indicted by a federal grand jury in January 2025 and pleaded guilty on July 14, 2025.

Federal law requires Dion to register as a sex offender because of a previous conviction for Sexual Abuse of a Minor. He has previously been convicted for failing to register. After his most recent release from prison, Dion registered an address in Fort Thompson on the Crow Creek Sioux Indian Reservation in March 2024. Authorities said that he moved from this address on April 11, 2024, and did not update his registration as required by law.

The case is part of Project Safe Childhood, an initiative started by the Department of Justice in May 2006 aimed at addressing child sexual exploitation and abuse. The project coordinates efforts among federal, state, and local agencies to find and prosecute offenders and help victims. More information about Project Safe Childhood can be found at https://www.justice.gov/psc.

The U.S. Marshal’s Service investigated the case. Assistant U.S. Attorney Meghan Dilges prosecuted it.

“The sentencing took place on July 29, 2025.”
