A man from Kyle, South Dakota, has been sentenced to 12 years in federal prison for assaulting a woman and causing serious bodily injury. The sentencing of Vinnie Sonny Makes Good, 37, was handed down by U.S. District Judge Karen E. Schreier on January 2, 2026, according to an announcement from United States Attorney Ron Parsons.

Makes Good was convicted on two counts of Assault Resulting in Serious Bodily Injury. In addition to the prison term, he will serve three years of supervised release and must pay $200 in special assessments to the Federal Crime Victims Fund as well as $328.02 in restitution.

The charges stemmed from two separate assaults on his dating partner. In March 2023, Makes Good assaulted the victim inside a vehicle near Kyle before throwing her out and continuing the attack by kicking and punching her. The victim suffered injuries to her face, torso, legs, and a broken pinky finger.

A second assault occurred in October 2023 involving the same victim. She sustained a 3 mm left tentorial subdural hematoma and fractures to vertebrae in her back. After the incident, she was first taken to Indian Health Services Hospital in Pine Ridge and then transferred to Monument Health in Rapid City for further treatment.

“This matter was prosecuted by the U.S. Attorney’s Office because the Major Crimes Act, a federal statute, mandating certain violent crimes alleged to have occurred in Indian country be prosecuted in federal court as opposed to State court,” said the press release.

The case was investigated by the Oglala Sioux Tribe Department of Public Safety and prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Megan Poppen.

Makes Good was immediately remanded into custody of the U.S. Marshals Service following sentencing.
