A man from Mission, South Dakota, has been sentenced to six and a half years in federal prison for assault with a dangerous weapon after firing a handgun at another man. The sentencing of Richard Joseph One Feather, 56, was handed down by U.S. District Judge Eric C. Schulte on January 6, 2026.
One Feather will also serve three years of supervised release following his prison term and must pay a $100 special assessment to the Federal Crime Victims Fund. He was indicted by a federal grand jury in January 2025 and pleaded guilty on October 1, 2025.
The incident occurred on July 20, 2024, in the Winner Housing area of the Rosebud Sioux Indian Reservation. According to authorities, One Feather confronted an adult male with a handgun and fired at him, narrowly missing.
The case was investigated by the Rosebud Sioux Tribe Law Enforcement Services and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives. Assistant U.S. Attorney Meghan Dilges prosecuted the case.
“This matter is being prosecuted by the U.S. Attorney’s Office because the Major Crimes Act, a federal statute, mandates that certain violent crimes alleged to have occurred in Indian Country be prosecuted in federal court as opposed to State court,” according to information provided by officials.
After sentencing, One Feather was remanded into custody of the U.S. Marshals Service.
