A Mission, South Dakota man has been sentenced to federal prison for assaulting a tribal police officer. U.S. District Judge Eric C. Schulte handed down the sentence on January 6, 2026.
Everett Joseph Menard, 29, received a sentence of one year and four months in federal prison. After his release, he will serve three years of supervised release and must pay a $100 special assessment to the Federal Crime Victims Fund.
Menard was indicted by a federal grand jury in July 2025 and pleaded guilty on October 1, 2025. The conviction relates to an incident that occurred in March 2025 within the Rosebud Sioux Indian Reservation. According to authorities, Menard became combative during his arrest by tribal officers who were responding to a call. He struck a Tribal Police Officer in the face and attempted to flee.
“Assaults on law enforcement officers will be prosecuted and the perpetrators punished,” said U.S. Attorney Parsons. “We stand shoulder to shoulder with the brave, dedicated, and professional officers of the Rosebud Sioux Tribal Police seeking to protect the security and safety of the communities they serve every day.”
The investigation was conducted by Rosebud Sioux Tribe Law Enforcement Services. Assistant U.S. Attorney Meghan Dilges prosecuted the case.
Following sentencing, Menard was immediately remanded into custody by the U.S. Marshals Service.
