A Mission, South Dakota man has been sentenced to two years and six months in federal prison for assault resulting in serious bodily injury. The sentencing was announced by U.S. Attorney Ron Parsons and took place on November 12, 2025, before U.S. District Judge Eric C. Schulte.
Tyler Waukechon, 32, received the prison sentence along with three years of supervised release and was ordered to pay a $100 special assessment to the Federal Crime Victims Fund.
Waukechon was indicted by a federal grand jury in February 2025 and pleaded guilty on August 7, 2025. The conviction relates to an incident in October 2024 on the Rosebud Sioux Indian Reservation. According to authorities, Waukechon confronted another adult male at a residence in Mission and struck him in the face with a shovel, causing a deep laceration that required hospitalization. He was arrested later that day at a nearby residence.
The case was investigated by the Rosebud Sioux Tribe Law Enforcement Services and prosecuted by Supervisory Assistant U.S. Attorney Kirk Albertson.
Waukechon was immediately remanded to the custody of the U.S. Marshals Service.
