A Rapid City man has been sentenced to over two years in federal prison for possessing a firearm as a felon. U.S. District Judge Camela C. Theeler handed down the sentence to Joshua Munyan, 41, on January 5, 2026.

Munyan received a sentence of two years and three months in federal prison, followed by three years of supervised release. He was also ordered to pay a $100 special assessment to the Federal Crime Victims Fund.

The case began when Munyan was indicted by a federal grand jury in March 2025 for possession of a firearm by a prohibited person. He pleaded guilty on September 29, 2025.

According to court documents, Munyan was stopped while driving by an officer from the Rapid City Police Department. During the stop, officers found that he had a Smith & Wesson .38 caliber revolver. Munyan is legally barred from owning firearms due to a previous felony drug conviction in Pennington County.

The prosecution noted that this case falls under Operation Take Back America, which is an initiative aimed at combating illegal immigration and organized crime while protecting communities from violent offenders. The operation combines resources from the Department of Justice’s Organized Crime Drug Enforcement Task Forces (OCDETFs) and Project Safe Neighborhood (PSN). PSN seeks collaboration between law enforcement agencies and local communities to reduce gun violence and improve neighborhood safety.

The investigation involved both the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) and the Rapid City Police Department. Assistant U.S. Attorney Anna Lindrooth prosecuted the case.

Following sentencing, Munyan was immediately taken into custody by the U.S. Marshals Service.
