A Sioux Falls man has been sentenced to nearly two years in federal prison after being convicted of possessing a firearm as a felon. United States Attorney Ron Parsons announced that U.S. District Judge Karen E. Schreier handed down the sentence on March 2, 2026.

Donald Hoff, age 34, received a sentence of 22 months in federal prison. He will also serve two years of supervised release and must pay a $100 special assessment to the Federal Crime Victims Fund.

Hoff was indicted by a federal grand jury in August 2025 for possession of a firearm by a prohibited person. He pleaded guilty on December 30, 2025.

According to court records, Hoff had a Taurus 9mm pistol and about 27 grams of methamphetamine on March 21, 2025, in Sioux Falls. He was not allowed to have the firearm due to an earlier felony conviction for possession of a stolen vehicle under South Dakota law.

The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) and the South Dakota Highway Patrol investigated the case. Assistant U.S. Attorney Mark Joyce prosecuted it.

Hoff was immediately remanded into custody by the U.S. Marshals Service.
