A Sioux Falls man has been sentenced to 11 years in federal prison after being convicted of conspiracy to distribute a controlled substance. The sentencing took place on November 17, 2025, with Chief Judge Roberto A. Lange presiding at the U.S. District Court.
Brett Berglund, age 54, received an additional five years of supervised release and was ordered to pay a fine as well as a $100 special assessment to the Federal Crime Victims Fund.
Berglund was indicted by a federal grand jury in November 2024 for his role in distributing methamphetamine. He pleaded guilty on August 18, 2025. According to court documents, Berglund acted as a sub-distributor for a drug trafficking organization based in California and admitted to distributing more than 500 grams of methamphetamine within the Sioux Falls area.
The case was investigated by the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), and Special Assistant U.S. Attorney Mark Joyce prosecuted the matter.
United States Attorney Ron Parsons stated: “This prosecution is part of an Organized Crime Drug Enforcement Task Forces (OCDETF) investigation. OCDETF identifies, disrupts, and dismantles the highest-level drug traffickers, money launderers, gangs, and transnational criminal organizations that threaten the United States by using a prosecutor-led, intelligence-driven, multi-agency approach that leverages the strengths of federal, state, and local law enforcement agencies against criminal networks.”
Following sentencing, Berglund was immediately remanded into custody by the U.S. Marshals Service.
